If you own a cast iron bathtub or a similar metal tub, you will likely begin to experience signs of fading as the every day wear and tear takes its toll on the bathtub. The signs of wearing and tearing can be quite unsightly with the paint peeling and the metal underneath beginning to show through. While it may be tempting to replace your bathtub, refinishing it can actually save you more money in the long run. With kits like Rustoleum's White bathtub & Tile refinish paint kit, the job is made quite simple. Your tub will be in pristine condition for many more years to come.
Don't Replace your Bathtub, Refinish it!
Refinishing your bathtub can be done in 3 simple steps. Take your time and carry out the steps thoroughly to avoid having to redo the process over again prematurely.
#1 Scrub down the tub. This means not only cleaning the tub thoroughly, but you must also use sandpaper - the kit will specify the type of sandpaper to use - to scrape off layers of old paint before you can begin to use the refinishing kit. The reason for this is to ensure that the epoxy does not chip off with old paint and destroy your refinishing job. The sandpaper also ensures that you have a rough surface that is easy for the epoxy in terms of adhesion.
#2 Apply the Epoxy Paint. In order to get the best finish, make sure you apply the paint in one direction only. You can apply a few coats over each other to get the desired effect and look. You may notice that small bubbles may form while you are painting, this is perfectly normal. The bubbles will flatten as the paint dries, leaving you with a smooth surface.
#3 Allow the Paint to Dry Completely. This is especially important because if the paint is not allowed to dry, it may be susceptible to wearing off quicker. The recommended time to allow the paint to dry can be found on the particular kit you use. It may take up to 72 hours before you can use the tub again, so be prepared to plan ahead if you only have one bathtub in your home.
Refinishing your own tub is made simple with a Rusteoleum Bathtub and Tile Refinish Paint Kit. By simply refinishing your bathtub rather than replacing it, you are saving yourself thousands of dollars.
