Add Charm and Style With a Unique Coffee Table

The coffee table is a staple sitting room item, it's often in the middle of the room and you should make it into a real feature. There are so many types of table you can buy, or try making your own. You could even try adapting another table to make it more unique and personalised. Dining sat on the floor in the Japanese style around a low table is becoming popular. Often a standard sized coffee table is too small for this if there are more than two of you in the household, or if you have guests round for dinner. You can buy special low tables for such a purpose, but don't forget to consider the really simple and cheap option of just cutting the legs of a standard dining table right down! Round, rectangular or square tables all look good low, so pick something that best suits your room. Cheap dining tables are easy to come by, or pick up a second hand one. You can get some coffee tables with a glass top, underneath which is a storage area, either one large storage block or several display compartments. It's a great way to display ornaments and curios without taking up space around the room, and being enclosed it also reduces the amount of dusting you need to do! With this type of design you can change the look of table often, for example you can fill it with tinsel and baubles to theme it at Christmas. Any table with storage can be useful, so consider what you'd like to be able to hide away and find a table with the right sized drawers or storage box underneath. Perhaps you have a lot of magazines and papers, or maybe you often sit on the sofa knitting and would like somewhere to keep your wool and needles close to hand. If you can't afford to splash out on a brand new coffee table there's loads you can do to revamp your old one. If it's covered in coffee rings then perhaps paint it. If you're artistic you could decorate it too. You could cover the top in cheap kitchen wall tiles, perhaps creating a mosaic. You can get vinyl in lots of interesting colours and patterns, This is very cheap and pretty easy to apply. Tiles and vinyl will also help prolong the life of the table as they're both very easy to keep clean. You could consider using something else entirely as a coffee table, perhaps an old trunk, or just use a storage box with some beautiful material draped over it. I've seen a lovely coffee table that was simply an old blanket box with a sari over the top of it which the owner had picked up cheap from an Asian haberdashery. It really added to the luxurious feel of the room.
