The Monreale mosaics represent the largest ornament of this type in Italy, masking zero,seventy five hectares with at least 100 million glass and stone tesserae. This large work was executed between 1176 and 1186 by the order of King William II of Sicily. The iconography of the mosaics in the presbytery is much like Cefalu whereas the pictures in the nave are almost the same as the narrative scenes in the Cappella Palatina.

The Martorana mosaic of Roger II blessed by Christ was repeated with the figure of King William II instead of his predecessor. Another panel exhibits the king providing the mannequin of the cathedral to the Theotokos. The final Byzantine mosaic work was created for the Hagia Sophia, Constantinople in the midst of the 14th century. The nice jap arch of the cathedral collapsed in 1346, bringing down the third of the principle dome. By 1355 not only the big Pantokrator picture was restored but new mosaics had been set on the jap arch depicting the Theotokos, the Baptist and Emperor John V Palaiologos (discovered solely in 1989).

Only fragments survived from the unique mosaic decoration of Amalfi's Norman Cathedral. The mosaic ambos in the churches of Ravello show that mosaic artwork was widespread in Southern Italy through the 11th–thirteenth centuries.

Beyond the Alps the first essential instance of mosaic art was the ornament of the Palatine Chapel in Aachen, commissioned by Charlemagne. A rare example of surviving Carolingian mosaics is the apse semi-dome ornament of the oratory of Germigny-des-Prés in-built 805–806 by Theodulf, bishop of Orléans, a number one determine of the Carolingian renaissance. This distinctive murals, rediscovered only in the nineteenth century, had no followers.

In Florence a magnificiant mosaic of the Last Judgement decorates the dome of the Baptistery.
